Goldman Sachs profits down by half on weak debt trading

Wall Street firm Goldman Sachs has reported net income of $2.39bn (£1.49bn) for the fourth quarter of 2010, down 53% from a year ago.

The poor result was expected, following weak numbers from Citigroup on Tuesday.

As at Citigroup, the investment bank's performance was dragged down by weak business at its bonds, currency and commodities trading division.

Total profits for the year as a whole were $8.4bn, down 38% on 2009. Yet total pay was down a mere 5%.

The Wall Street firm paid out $15.4bn in "compensation and benefits" according to its financial statement.

This was considerably more than the net earnings left over for the broker-dealer's shareholders.

The figures mean that average pay per employee works out at $431,000, although the company's top earners are likely to be paid several times this amount.

The ratio of compensation to revenues has risen from 36% to 39%. Which some will see as the bankers doing considerably better out of the firm than the owners”

End Quote

In total, the company awarded 39% of its $39bn net revenues for the year to its employees, leaving only a 21% share attributable to shareholders as net earnings.

'Low client activity'

The fourth quarter figures rounded off a year that has become progressively more difficult for Goldman.

At $3.79, earnings per share for the last three months slightly beat analysts' expectations of $3.76.

However, net revenues - a better measure of overall business levels - undershot expectations, down 10% from a year ago at $8.64bn, versus an expected $9bn.

The outlook has already improved from what is turning out to be a miserable quarter”

End Quote Simon Maughan Equity analyst, MF Global

"Looking ahead, we are seeing signs of growth and more economic activity," said chairman and chief executive, Lloyd Blankfein.

The company's share price dropped 2.7% in early trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

"It's confirming that [the fourth quarter] was difficult," said Simon Maughan, analyst at MF Global in London. "If Goldman Sachs can't show a strong performance, then good luck to anyone else trying to."

However, Mr Maughan dismissed the relevance of the last three months of the year - which comes as traders tend to wind down activity ahead of the year-end - as a performance indicator.

"The outlook has already improved from what is turning out to be a miserable quarter," he said.

Trading woes

Business at the company's fixed income, currencies and commodities group - which deals in bonds and credit derivatives among other things - was particularly lacklustre.

It reported net revenues down 48% on a year earlier, following a similarly dismal third quarter for Goldman Sachs profit down by halfthe group.

Goldman blamed "low client activity levels" for the poor performance.

The firm blamed the same reason for a 10% fall in net revenues at its "investment banking" wing, which provides financial advice on mergers and acquisitions, and arranges new bond and share issues for clients.

"Trading for their own account and investment banking are a big piece of what they do," said Malcolm Polley, chief investment officer at Stewart Capital Advisors in Pennsylvania.

He added that Goldman made most of its money buying and selling for its own account.

One factor likely to have hurt the firm's fixed income business was a sharp and sudden drop in the value of US government bonds in December.

The sell-off reflected growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will succeed in raising the near-zero inflation rate in the US.

But as markets demanded a higher return from government bonds to compensate for higher inflation, this also fed into a sudden increase in the cost of borrowing for Goldman Sachs and its clients.

Obama hosts China's Hu at rare private White House meal

Chinese President Hu Jintao has kicked off a four-day US visit with a rare private dinner at the White House with President Barack Obama.

Analysts say Mr Hu's visit is the most important by a Chinese leader in 30 years given China's growing military, economic and diplomatic clout.

Relations have been strained on issues from currency controls and trade disputes to human rights and Taiwan.

Talks are also expected to include North Korea's nuclear activities.

Mr Hu stepped off a jet plane to a show of pomp at Andrews Air Force base outside Washington on Tuesday, greeted by US Vice-President Joseph Biden.

In the US capital, meanwhile, raucous demonstrators protesting against China's Tibet policies gathered in front of the White House, waving signs and flags and chanting slogans.

Workers hung US and Chinese flags along Pennsylvania Avenue, one of Washington DC's chief arteries, which runs between the White House and the Capitol building where Congress sits.

Tuesday's dinner will be followed on Wednesday by talks in the Oval Office, during which White House aides pledged the US president would engage his counterpart on the top issues facing the two nations.

Hu Jintao's Itinerary

  • 18 Jan: Arrives in Washington, has private dinner with US President Barack Obama
  • 19 Jan: Series of bilateral meetings followed by joint press conference; lunch with Vice-President Joe Biden; formal state dinner
  • 20 Jan: Visits Capitol Hill to meet congressional leaders; departs for Chicago
  • 21 Jan: Leaves Chicago for Beijing

"Whether we're dealing with economic discussions, whether we're dealing with those in the security realm, or whether we're doing those with human rights, I think this is an argument that we have and we'll continue to make to the Chinese and push them to do better," spokesman Robert Gibbs told reporters.

On Wednesday evening Mr Obama will host an opulent state dinner.

Later in the week, Mr Hu is expected to travel to Chicago, where some predict he will sign a series of trade and investment agreements.

China's foreign ministry called Mr Hu's visit "an important one".

"We hope the visit will promote positive and co-operative China-US relations, map out new directions for bilateral relations in the new era and raise co-operation to a new level," said spokesman Hong Lei.

Start Quote

There are countless ways of characterising the relationship between these two nations, but almost every one is animated by the idea that we are witnessing an historic shift”

End Quote Damian Grammaticas

This is likely to be Mr Hu's last state visit to the US before a handover of power is completed in China in 2013.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has said that America and China are "at a critical juncture, a time when the choices we make, big and small, will shape the trajectory of this relationship".

Both sides recognise the deep divisions that have dogged relations over the past year: the value of the yuan, the huge trade gap, human rights, US arms sales to Taiwan.

The US is also concerned by China's growing military strength.

Earlier this month, during a trip to China by US Defence Secretary Robert Gates, Beijing confirmed that it had tested a prototype J-20 stealth fighter, invisible to radar.

The US has also bolstered its support for its East Asian allies, most notably South Korea and Japan amid maritime rivalries with China in the Pacific.

The two powers have also been at loggerheads over how to curb North Korea's belligerent behaviour and advancement of its nuclear programme.

In a rare interview with foreign media, Mr Hu acknowledged the "differences and sensitive issues", but said co-operation rather than confrontation would serve both sides best.

'Manipulation'

Ahead of Mr Hu's arrival in the US, a Chinese trade mission signed six deals with US companies in Houston worth $600m (£376m) - which analysts say is an attempt to create a "positive" atmosphere for the talks.

Start Quote

The relationship will remain difficult as long as the Chinese suffer from hubris based on a mistaken belief in American decline”

End Quote Joseph Nye Professor at Harvard University

Trade between the US and China is worth $400bn, up from $100m 30 years ago, when the US formalised relations with the communist state.

The US is also encouraging China to buy tens of billions of dollars of aircraft from Boeing, car parts, agricultural goods and beef.

A series of deals on bilateral trade, energy, environmental protection, infrastructure building, and cultural exchanges are expected to be signed during the visit, Chinese state media reported.

Meanwhile, US senators have been pressing Congress to penalise Beijing for "manipulating" its currency.

They say it is important to punish China if it does not allow the yuan to rise in value rather than manage its exchange rate - making Chinese products cheaper in the US and raising the price of US goods in China.

Mr Hu earlier said the yuan was not undervalued, and that China had adopted a "managed floating exchange rate regime" determined by the balance of international payments and supply and demand.

He also questioned the role of the US dollar as the world's reserve currency and criticised US monetary policy, saying that by keeping interest rates low, the Federal Reserve was devaluing the dollar and creating inflation elsewhere.

Carmelo Anthony's 'Ultimate Dream' Is To Play In New York? Deal With It

Carmelo Anthony, he of the amaranthine trade rumors, told ESPN reporter Colleen Dominguez that it is his "ultimate dream" to play pro basketball in New York City. Mind you, he did not specify between the New York Knicks or New Jersey Nets (who will, in two years, become the Brooklyn Nets, or Heavens forbid the Brooklyn New Yorkers). He just said that he dreams of playing in New York, the city of his birth and early childhood, and by many accounts the greatest city of the world.

And this, like all things that slip from the lips of America's young, wealthy and more often than not black athletes, is somehow contemptible.

An example of some of the GARGH! headed in Melo's direction can be found on the Twitter feed of Chicago Bulls broadcaster Chuck Swirsky.

Star-divide

Swirsky-tz-500_medium

WIth all due respect to Mr. Swirsky, who I don't mean to single out, this is the most ridiculous instance of morally superior indignation I've seen since ... well, since the entire Western Hemisphere deemed LeBron James to be Satan for picking South Beach over Lake Erie back in July. And this isn't to disparage Denver, a cool town (well, a cold town) with a passionate NBA fan base. But we're talking about New York here. The greatest city in the world.*

'Melo would rather spend his time in New York than anywhere else in the world. You know who feels the same? The 8.4 million who live in the city. The tens of thousands (or more) college grads who migrate there every May, June and July to start their careers at the center of the civilized universe. Every musician, ever. Every visual artist, ever. Every stage actor, playwright, set designer or wannabe theater director, ever. Just about every athlete who isn't a clownfraud choker who can't take the New York media pressure. (Lookin' at you, Cliff Lee.)

You can't regulate dreams, man. If 'Melo loves New York, like noted jacktaters Frank Sinatra, John Lennon and Flava Flav, he loves New York. I mean, Brooklyn is where 'Melo spent the first nine years of his life. He's gonna be vilified for saying it is his dream to go back? Are you kidding me?

Reality to the people of Planet Earth, come in people of Planet Earth: your life experience is not the same as that of anyone else. Your definition of "home" and "loyalty" is not the same as that of anyone else. Just because you would never openly talk about dream job while being employed by something less than a dream job does not mean that someone else (someone who is being badgered constantly on this topic, by the way) should not talk about his or her own dream job. You can't regulate dreams, and you can't live other people's lives for them. Stop tryin'. Please please please stop tryin'.

In conclusion, in solidarity with 'Melo, I hereby announce that it is my ultimate dream to cover Indian Premier League cricket for the Times of India. I sincerely hope that I have not offended other NBA writers and my SB Nation bosses by revealing this.

Brazil floods: More than 500 dead

More than 500 people are now known to have died in floods in south-eastern Brazil, the country's worst natural disaster for several decades.

Heavy rain has brought massive mudslides down on several towns, where thousands have been made homeless.

Police say the number of dead is likely to rise further.

The death toll has now surpassed the number killed in mudslides in Caraguatatuba in Sao Paulo state in 1967, in which up to 430 people died.

'It's all gone'

Rescue workers will resume searching for survivors in the mountainous Serrana region, north of Rio de Janeiro, on Friday.

Many spent Thursday scrabbling with their bare hands through debris.

On her visit to the area, President Dilma Rousseff promised a shipment of seven tonnes of medicines.

In the Campo Grande area of Teresopolis, which was earlier cut off, rescuers found people pulling bodies from the mud.

One Campo Grande resident, Carols Eurico, told the Associated Press: "I have friends still lost in all of this mud. It's all gone."

At The Scene

If you reach the city centre of Teresopolis, you might not think the scale of destruction was too great, but on the outskirts and other neighbourhoods - such as Campo Grande and Posse - there is a sense of just how much was affected.

In these places, there is mud everywhere - some of it more than 3m (8.5ft) high. Cars are destroyed and turned upside down, from small sports cars to big trucks. The river that runs through the city is known to be calm, but it is now completely flooded. Most of the houses destroyed were poor quality, made out of timber. Emergency services are everywhere.

Many of the people who lost their homes have taken shelter in the local gymnasium. Every now and then, a new list comes out of people that have been confirmed dead.

Surprisingly at the gym, most people managed to remain calm and were chatting, although many have lost a friend or family member. But everyone in Teresopolis can feel just how terrible this disaster has been.

Another resident told AFP news agency: "One woman tried to save her children, but her two-month-old baby was carried away by a torrent like a doll."

The Brazilian armed forces have brought in a field hospital and hundreds of people have taken refuge in the gymnasium in Teresopolis.

But the number of injured was threatening to overwhelm the medical services.

Jorge Mario, the mayor of the Teresopolis, said: "There are three or four neighbourhoods that were totally destroyed in rural areas. There are hardly any houses standing there and all the roads and bridges are destroyed."

In one dramatic filmed rescue, 53-year-old Ilair Pereira de Souza was pulled by rope from a destroyed house surrounded by raging water.

"I thought I was going to die," she said.

Ms Pereira de Souza had jumped with her dog Beethoven but was forced to let him go to survive.

"If I had tried to save him, I would have died. The poor thing. He stayed for a moment looking me in the eyes, and then he was swept away."

"It's very overwhelming. The scenes are very shocking," President Rousseff said on her visit to the area on Thursday.

The day before, she signed a decree authorising 780m reais ($480m; £296m) in emergency funding for the affected areas.

Ms Rousseff described the destruction as an act of God but she also expressed anger at illegal construction.

"We saw areas in which mountains untouched by men dissolved. But we also saw areas in which illegal occupation caused damage to the health and lives of people."

Saying that building houses in risky areas was "the rule rather than the exception" in Brazil, she added: "When there are no housing policies in place, where will a person with an income of up to two minimum wages live? He will live where he is not allowed to."

'Humble people'

Ms Rousseff said the state would care for the victims but said stopping future tragedies would be a priority.

Nova Friburgo, Teresopolis and Petropolis

  • The towns, which lie in a region called the Serrana, are popular holiday destinations for city dwellers keen to enjoy fresh mountain air and verdant surroundings
  • They also attract mountain climbers from around the country and elsewhere
  • In the 19th Century they were a popular summer destination for emperors and aristocrats. Petropolis was named after Emperor Pedro II, and is known as the Imperial City of Brazil
  • The area also has historical links with German and Swiss settlers
  • Tourism has replaced agriculture as the region's principal economic activity
  • The towns' populations have quadrupled over the last 30 years, according to the local governor

"We are here to guarantee that this moment of reconstruction will also be a moment of prevention."

Rio de Janeiro Governor Sergio Cabral blamed local governments for allowing poor building and illegal occupations.

"Unfortunately, what we saw in Petropolis, Teresopolis and Nova Friburgo, since the 1980s, was a problem similar to what happened in the city of Rio - letting the poorer people occupy risk areas."

He said some rich mansions had been damaged but most of the victims were "humble people".

Mr Cabral ended the news conference by asking people in risk areas to leave their houses and seek public shelter or in other homes.

US banks to close foreign diplomatic mission accounts

Foreign diplomats have complained to the US government about the decision of several US banks to end services for diplomatic missions.

The diplomats of several countries said they were actively searching for new banks but were having little success.

Federal officials heard the concerns of roughly 150 envoys during a closed-door briefing on Thursday at the United Nations in New York City.

Some diplomats said the UN budget could be affected by the account closures.

The Wall Street Journal newspaper suggested in November that the banks' decisions were prompted by difficulties in adhering to federal money-laundering regulations affecting international transfers.

Regulations have been tightened since 9/11 in an effort to stop the flow of illegal foreign funds for crimes like financing terrorist acts.

'Big concern'

Speaking after the briefing, state department official Patrick Kennedy told reporters the missions had been given advice on "alternative approaches" they could take to obtain banking services.

He stressed that the banks' decisions were based on commercial reasons and "not because the bank is saying that the embassy of Xanadu or the mission of Shangri-La is engaged in some nefarious activity".

The US would continue its work with both diplomats and the banking industry, he added.

JP Morgan Chase, which handles many diplomatic accounts, did not specify a reason for terminating the services.

But reports suggest it may be because monitoring the accounts has become too costly.

In a letter dated 30 September, the bank told its diplomatic clients it had "made the decision to close its division that serves diplomatic and foreign government entities" and that its decision was not a reflection on how the envoys handled their accounts.

The closures at JP Morgan are scheduled to come into effect on 31 March and will affect mission accounts but not those of individual diplomats.

The BBC's Barbara Plett at the United Nations says this is a big concern for diplomats, with at least six telling reporters they had not yet been able to find another bank for their mission, even though they have been shopping around.

Obama's Tucson Speech Strikes A Chord With Republicans And Democrats

Following President Obama's remarks in Tucson, Arizona, Wednesday evening, the Web and cable TV pundits were buzzing with mostly positive reactions to the president's 37-minute speech.

Though Obama has been vocal on the shooting that left Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ) in critical condition after she was shot in the head at point-blank range, many viewed the speech as a crucial moment in his presidency.

Sam Stein of the Huffington Post notes that Obama brought humanity back to the Giffords story--something he argues has been lost in recent days and replaced with "something far more callous."

"Even as the president spoke, a debate waged among twitter and cable pundits as to whether the tone of the memorial was somehow off-putting. Earlier that morning, Sarah Palin had accused the media of 'blood libel' for casting her in the role of cheerleader for the extremists.

It was, as if, the actual shootings had become secondary players -- as if the human element had been lost in a political drama."

But when discussing 9-year-old Christina Taylor Green, Stein writes, "it was impossible not to think of the President as a father, gripped by doubt as to whether he could respond to a similar tragedy."

In "Through Christina's Eyes," Marc Ambinder of the National Journal also notes the significance of Obama's discussion of Green.

"By using the youngest victim of last week's rampage as his focal point, Obama made her America's cause and asked the nation to live lives as compassionate and caring as those felled by the gunman's bullets. Without wading into the who-coarsened-our-culture debate, he overshadowed it with a call to the better angels of our nature," he wrote.

Time magazine's Joe Klein also highlights the familial tone Obama took.

"Obama spoke to the city of Tucson, and to the United States of America, not so much as our President tonight, but as a member of our family," he wrote, describing Obama's role as a son to his elders, a brother to fellow public servants and a father to Green and other young Americans like her.

Allan Hoffenblum, publisher of the California Target Book, a non-partisan publication that analyzes legislative races, and a former GOP political consultant, said the president gave “his most effective performance since he was elected.”

“This is the first speech I’ve heard since he was running for president that I think he actually made an emotional impact on the audience he was talking to,” he said noting that the president was successful in not sounding like a “Harvard professor.” “[H]e could actually emote, actually have some empathy and actually articulate what most Americans wanted their president to say. I think he accomplished that.”

Klein also comments on the change in the president's tone.

"It was a remarkably personal speech, effortlessly sweeping away any notion of pomposity, over-intellectuality or distance. It was written and delivered in plain English. It summoned images, and emotions, that every American--even those who cannot countenance his legitimacy--could relate to and be moved by," he wrote.

Mother Jones' Washington Bureau Chief David Corn called it a "high moment of his presidency."

"The Obama Hate Machine better pray that Obama doesn't get other chances to address the nation in this manner…[I]t is in these moments that presidents can define themselves—especially for those voters who do not pay attention to the daily tussles of politics and policy. Obama did that well on Wednesday night, and the Obama haters must hate that."

James Fallows, a national correspondent for The Atlantic and former speechwriter for Jimmy Carter, deemed the speech a success because it was "hopeful and positive, even joyous, rather than morose."

"Obama turned this into a celebration -- of the people who were killed, of the values they lived by, and of the way their example could bring out the better in all of us and in our country," Fallows wrote.

Arizona Central's Bill Goodykoontz pointed out that Obama took the high road.

"Obama rose above the sniping, the blame and the deflection of same, elevating the debate by not taking part in it," he wrote.

Perhaps Time magazine's Michael Crowley put it most eloquently, "These call to our better angels -- directed less at the secondary issue of public discourse and more at the first principles of what we value as a society and the nobility of public service, perfectly matched the heartbreaking occasion. All the better that Obama delivered these words with both lyrical eloquence and moral authority. It was certainly the finest rhetorical moment of his presidency -- and perhaps of his life."

TV Tonight: Live To Dance, Top Chef All Stars, Off The Map

Live To Dance

semi-finals round 1, Top Chef All Stars brand new beach episode and Off The Map series premiere.

Live To Dance will air tonight as Paula Abdul returns with her hit TV show on CBS. Top Chef: All-Stars will air its “We’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat” beach episode which should be rather interesting on BRAVO. Off The Map series premiere will air on ABC after a brand new episode of Modern Family! Keep in mind that the “Live to Dance” is being pushed back in order to broadcast Obama at the Tuscon Memorial Service.

Paula Abdul returns tonight with her hit new show Live To Dance as 18 contestants battle it out for a chance at $500k. Tonight we will see six of the eighteen perform in the first round of three semi finals. From there 2 acts will move on into the finale. The judges will pick one and America will vote for the other each week for three weeks, beginning tonight. Make sure you tune in tonight for a brand new LIVE episode of Live To Dance at 9|8c on CBS.

Top Chef All Stars will return to BRAVO tonight with a brand new episode. Last week on the “Dim Dum Lose Sum” episode we saw Casey leave as she didn’t quite cut it. Tonight the remaining Top Chef contestants will be challenged to catch and cook fish for a beach party. It should be quite interesting as I am sure half of these chefs have never fished a day in their life. What are the chances that Padma Laskshmi or Tom Colicchio grab a rod and catches a fish? Tune in tonight to catch an all new Top Chef: All-Stars at 10|9c on BRAVO.

Last but not least on my TV tonight is the brand new show Off The Map. Think Grey’s Anatomy meets Lost as the Shonda Rhimes medical show takes place in the middle of nowhere. Critics are giving mixed reviews on the new show and I am curious to see if it is going to live up to the hype is has been getting. It will follow both Modern Family and Cougar Town so it better be good or it will get axed with quickness. Tune in tonight to watch the Off The Map series premiere at 10|9c on ABC.

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son Movie Trailer Official (HD)

FBI agent Malcolm Turner and his 17-year-old son, Trent, go undercover at an all-girls performing arts school after Trent witnesses a murder. Posing as Big Momma and Charmaine, they must find the murderer before he finds them.

Big Mommas is directed by the same man who directed Big Mommas House 2, John Whitesell. Thankfully, they have new blood writing the film. Matthew Fogel has taken over scripting duties. You may remember Fogel from the ZERO OTHER PROJECTS HE’S EVER WORKED ON. So it’s in good hands.

Brandon T. Jackson was a minor breakout in the cast of Tropic Thunder, playing the “actual black guy” Alpha Chino but, true to the character he played in the movie, outshone by Robert Downey Jr. in blackface. Since then it’s been a tougher road for the guy, with much worse movies– like Lottery Ticket and Percy Jackson and the Olympians– filling up his resume. Lucky for Mr. Jackson, though, we know it can’t get much worse. The first trailer for Big Mommas: LIke Father Like Son has hit over at MSN, and if gets worse than this for Jackson or Martin Lawrence or anyone else involved, I’d rather just not know about it.

A third Big Momma’s House movie is a pretty easy target to pick on, and I’m not sure what to do other than tell you all to watch the trailer below with the same astonished look I had on my face. All you really need to know is that Jackson plays Martin Lawrence’s son, and both have to go undercover as women, and for some reason wind up at an all-girl’s arts school. Yes, Big Momma winds up modeling nude for a life-drawing class. Yes, during a dance class there’s room for a joke about “That’s why they call it the Nutcracker!” Yeah, I’m going to do what I said I’d do before, shut up and let you guys suffer through this as you so choose.

Big Mommas hits theaters February 18 next year, during that terribly depressing pre-Oscar winter release schedule. It’s just going to be another one of those things we have to survive.

Big Momma’s House is a fundamentally bizarre movie. It is, essentially, an excuse to get another shrill over-the-hill comedian to dress up as a fat woman. Because, I dunno, the shame of being seen as an obese old lady in today’s society is, I suppose, hilarious?

Fastforward to 2010, and Martin Lawrence returns to crank the shrillness to eleven for Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son. This time Brandon T. Jackson (from Tropic Thunder) has been roped in to don another fat suit. Because one fat suit wasn’t funny enough. I wonder if Martin Lawrence actually enjoys doing this, or if he’s just killing time until Bad Boys 3.

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son movie will certainly be a downright hilarious joyride which will make audience to have belly aching laughs taking over them in a thoroughly entertaining way. Upcoming comedy venture will be the third installment to original movie and then the follow up which had taken comedy movie fans by surprise for their downright funny nature so with that factor behind it Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son movie will be eagerly waited and anticipated. Therefore a must watch fun and frolic packed motion picture experience this is bound to become which will be of most memorable kind.

Homeless man w/golden radio voice in Columbus, OH [VIDEO]

I just spoke with Doral Chenoweth, the photographer/videographer who shot this piece for The Columbus Dispatch. He informed me that Ted can usually be found at the Hudson ramp off of I-71 South (for those of you who live in Columbus). If anyone in the Columbus area can check him out, hopefully we can find a way to contact him (Doral said he did not learn where Ted lives, but Doral knows there are no nearby homeless shelters). Also, Doral was an awesome guy on the phone, he told me his wife is carrying around a restaurant gift certificate in her car for Ted in hopes she’ll see him again. If anyone needs any photography/videography work, look him up Doral on the internets here or here.

UPDATE3: I received an e-mail from the the radio jocks who featured the sound-byte from this video on their show 1/4/11. They are considering hiring Ted using the $15K donation one of the listeners said they would donate for his salary. If they choose to hire Ted, they will e-mail me. They asked that I not release their e-mail account.

UPDATE4: joshfitz posted a tweet by the radio jocks, they’ll have Ted’s story featured on their radio show Thursday! I am going to contact the RJs again to see if they were able to get contact information for Ted that they can share!

UPDATE5: Dave and Jimmy (the RJ’s that played an audio clip from this video on their radio talk show 1/4/11 where I heard this in the first place) gave the “OK” to share their information. Their show airs live from 6:00 am-10:00 am EST and can be listened to at daveandjimmy.com. They are trying to contact Ted to have him on the show on Thursday.

UPDATE6: dj1200techniques has set up a website for Ted Williams. dj1200techniques has been a redditor for over 2 years now with a fair amount of activity and karma, so I feel he’s trustworthy. Once we have contact with Ted, I will personally see to it that all funds get to him. Ladyfingers has offered to buy Ted a phone, is there anyone in Columbus who can PM with Ladyfingers to get that phone to Ted?

UPDATE7: [The Morning Zoo](daveandjimmy.com) tracked down Ted! They’ll be hosting Ted on their radio show tomorrow, Wednesday January 5th at 7:15am EST! The link above has a “listen live” section, so we can all tune in then!

UPDATE8: jhietter has offered to sponsor Ted through this transition and oxytechx would like to get Ted work in the UK

UPDATE9: dj1200techniques’ fundraiser for Ted was an AMAZING success. We already hit the goal of $500 by a huge amount ($826 at last glance). Thank you so much for those of you who donated, but please don’t donate anymore, its probably prudent to not overwhelm Ted and instead give him a fair amount to get himself established again. Everyone who donated is AMAZING!

People's Choice Awards 2011 Winners

The only awards show voted on by you, it's the '37th People's Choice Awards.' To keep things cozy and familiar, Queen Latifah returns for a fifth consecutive year as host for the festivities, which kicked off at 9PM ET on CBS, and we'll be there with you every step of the way.

This year the TV categories cover everything from the best in shows and actors, to favorite TV families, doctors, talk show hosts, obsessions, chefs and even guilty pleasures. You can see a list of all the nominees here.

As the People's Choice honors the best in television, movies and music, you'll find even more coverage at our sister site, Moviefone. Check out their photo gallery of all the gorgeous styles as the stars made their way into the Nokia Theatre for the big night. And you won't want to miss Moviefone's results analysis either, to see which movies and film stars are the 'People's Choice.'

175 million votes came in, setting a new record for the People's Choice Awards. Latifah opened the night by saying, "I'm feeling a lot of 'Glee' tonight," and the show did pick up two awards, but it wasn't the night's biggest winner. The 'People's Choice' was also feeling a pretty extensive product placement with the Zio smartphone, which was used in place of envelopes to reveal the winners.

The year of love for Conan O'Brien continued as he took the first TV Award of the night for Favorite Talk Show Host. "When you're up against Oprah Winfrey, you don't want to win," he said in his acceptance speech. "It makes Oprah very, very angry."

Neil Patrick Harris ('How I Met Your Mother') took the award for Favorite TV Comedy Actor, his first honor since his 'Doogie Howser' days, while Favorite TV Comedy Actress went to Jane Lynch ('Glee'). After winning as Favorite New TV Comedy last year, 'Glee' took Favorite TV Comedy this time around in its first year in that category.

On the drama side, Lisa Edelstein ('House') won her first ever award for Favorite TV Drama Actress, and took a picture of the audience to commemorate the moment. 'House' was also honored as Favorite TV Drama, with Hugh Laurie taking the award for Favorite TV Drama Actor, making it a clean sweep for the veteran series. Laurie even picked up an additional nod as Favorite TV Doctor, making house the most honored television series of the night.

After being gushed over by Queen Latifah, who remembered that one time they were on the cover of that magazine and that other time they fought and then made up and then fought and made up again, 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' was confirmed as hers and our Favorite TV Guilty Pleasure.

Favorite New TV Drama went to 'Hawaii Five-0,' and despite receiving a continuous critical drubbing that began even before it premiered, the people have spoken and '$#*! My Dad Says' won as Favorite New TV Comedy.

While they didn't appear on the television show, 'Fringe' got some love as Favorite Sci-Fi/Fantasy Show, while you chose 'Dexter' as your Favorite TV Obsession. After twenty-two years, 'The Simspons' showed staying power, winning Favorite TV Family. For more TV winners, check out the full list of winners below.

US Navy ship information video mimics masturbation and gay shower scenes?

It sounds like the naval officer on the USS Enterprise, who was in charge of making the ships safety and rules informational video for the crew, has spiced the generic material up a little too much. This once boring subject matter now has people really paying attention to it, as the Navy has it under investigation, according to Yahoo News.

The ships public service video has girls with girls in the shower and men with men in the shower, along with profanity, gay slurs, and images of men pretending to masturbate. This appears to have been done in a humorous way to bring some comedy into the picture.

Captain Owen Honors, the ships second ranking officer, is the man who allegedly put this video together and he appeared in the videos in 2006 and 2007, according to Yahoo News. The videos were shown throughout the ship on closed circuit Tvs. Captain Owen Honors was made the ships commander in May, according to the article on Yahoo News.

The videos were an attempt by Honors at getting the crews attention as it instructed them on ship board safety and rules, which that it did. The Navy does not like its depictions of what is thought to be humorous by the officer who made the video. Navy Commander Chris Sims gave a statement to the media saying “this was not acceptable then (when the videos were made) and it is not acceptable in today’s Navy.”

The Navy will continue with its investigation and it is most likely safe to say the videos are no longer used for passing on the mundane information that everyone must learn.

While Groton Connecticut is home port for big Naval ships such as the USS Annapolis, USS Hartford, USS Alexandria, and a dozen more, the USS Enterprise is based out of Norfolk Virginia, according to the US Navy home port list. Some of these ships resemble floating cities in their size and length.
