Mathematicians celebrate Pi Day

Mathematicians around the world are celebrating “Pi Day” and promoting efforts to solve the numerical puzzle that has been leading researchers in circles for centuries. Pi, the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter, is celebrated each year on March 14th (3/14) in honor of it’s first digits, 3.14.
Research into the highly important concept dates can be seen in texts dating as back as far as the ancient Egyptian, Babylonian and Indian civilizations. In modern times, Pi Day was the brainchild of theoretical physicist Larry Shaw, who created the day in 1989 while working at the San Francisco Exploratorium.
In 2009, House lawmakers enshrined the day as a national holiday across the United States.
Celebrations range from college parties to a catering gift from researchers at Raytheon. Raytheon celebrated by delivering “hundreds of apple pies to math and science teachers at public middle and high schools located within a 3.14-mile radius of the company’s headquarters in Waltham, Massachusetts.”
